COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, October 14, 2008: In an eco-friendly measure against the environmental hazard caused by polythene wrappers, the Sri Lanka government has evolved a technique to prepare food wrappers from banana leaves.
According to the Sri Lankan Agriculture Ministry, "a technique has been perfected to produce cured banana leaves that can be kept more than one month under refrigerated condition without any changes in color or quality."
People throughout south Asia have wrapped food in banana leaves since ancient times. The leaves provide a distinct fragrance and help to keep foods fresh.
Polyethylene sheets are convenient, but these take over a year to start degradation and can contain harmful chemicals.

This is a wonderful idea, Sanmugan! Brings back memories of those lovely meals we have in weddings in South India–served on banana leaves. The food indeed tastes better and seems more nourishing.
What great things happening over there, here is so backward..
:)
In malysia , everywhere, we see banana trees. Indian restaurants there serve rice meals on plantain leaves placed on eversilver plates.
I love this - using natural things. Gien taught me to make a dish using bamboo leaves to wrap food in and steam.
In Sri lanka , we use the Bamboo itself cut into a small tube of one foot long and inside, tiny balls made out of rice or wheat flour with scraped coconut then put it on a clay pot and steam. This one of the favourite meall here. Even Plm leaves cut and woven into a cone shape and all type of meals steamed very simply.
Oh yum!
I forgot an important item. We have to put some cloth round and round the bamboo pipe to prevent it from dropping into the pot. similarly a blockage inside made of cocnut shell piece or a metal piece at the end of the bamboo pipe to prevent the flower balls from dropping into the water boiling in the pot.
